Paul Vollmer il y a 2 ans (modifié)
I used to come here every night for a couple of drinks between 1973 - 1975 and would eat a pizza too. I was in the Air Force and worked next door to Air America (shared the same building) out at Don Muang Airfield (across from Bangkok Intn'l Airport where Don Muang Thai Air Base was located). Madrid Bar (as was the bar above it and, also the club at the Grace Hotel) were all owned by the same CIA Operative and his Thai Spouse.. I used to play Yahtzee with members of Air America at the Madrid Bar and, we would gamble for drinks. Never will I forget the night I won 23-Scotch and Waters. When my room-mate (retired Air Force Colonel) arrived after closing his bar for the night (midnight), he helped polish off several of the Scotch and Waters and then they were handcarried up to the bar upstairs where we continued to drink. Turned to my side where there were two Europeans drinking and, asked them what they were drinking (which was Scotch and Soda). I said, here's a Scotch and Water for each of you, and walked out at 2:30am. Never touched Scotch again in my life. NOTE: This WAS the place to come and have a good time. Camaraderie was top notch and, I will forever miss those that I worked and drank with.

| Joining the CIA after fighting in Vietnam as a Marine, Barry Broman’s first posting was war-torn Cambodia. He was present at the fall of Phnom Penh in 1975, escaping just before the Khmer Rouge took power. During his career, he was twice chief of station, once a deputy chief of station, and he supervised an international paramilitary project in support of the Cambodian resistance to Vietnamese invaders. He was actively involved in several assignments in counter-narcotics operations in Southeast Asia including a major bust that yielded 551 kilograms of high-grade heroin from a major drug trafficker. His favorite agent against a variety of hard targets was a fellow whose only demand was that his assignments be “life threatening.” (He survived them all.) As amazing as the characters Broman has met are the places he’s been, with visits to little-known and rarely seen places like the Naga Hills on the India–Burma border, the world-famous but off-limits jade and ruby mines of Burma, and the isolated Banda Islands of Indonesia, the home of nutmeg. Broman’s engaging tone is complemented by photographs taken throughout his career, many of them his own, made using the skills he learned as a teenager working for the Associated Press in Southeast Asia—including Marines in action in Vietnam, the ravages of war in Cambodia, and opium buyers forcing growers to sell in Burma. CIA CASE OFFICER BARRY BROMAN
CIA Case Officer Barry Broman recruited 41 agents during his 26 year career with the agency. He recounts some of the most interesting moments in his book “Risk Taker, Spy Maker”
He first fell in love with East Asia when his Air Force officer father invited him along on an assignment with the Thai Air Force. A caveat was that Barry would find a job so he secured a position with the Associated Press, becoming the youngest AP photographer in the world. His first assignment to Vietnam would be the first time he was shot at but wouldn’t be the last.
After receiving his college degree on a Navy ROTC scholarship he would spend seven months in Vietnam with the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines. Before he deployed to Vietnam, one of his professors asked if Barry had ever considered joining the CIA. Barry planned to go back to the AP after the military but chose to talk to the recruiter just for fun. When he notified the recruiter that he was deploying to Vietnam the recruiter gave him a business card and said “If you live, give me a call six months before you leave the Corps.” Barry did and 2 weeks later he joined the agency.
Barry emphasizes that he wasn’t a spy, he recruited spies. “We were in the business of making dreams come true.” He shares insights into the life of a case officer. The job is usually not a family affair, but he never approached a target until his wife approved.
He shares some interesting stories including the recruit who would only take assignments that were extremely dangerous and worked on a form of commission. A watershed moment of his career involved working with MI-6 on recruiting a hard target.
TAKEAWAY: “Only about ten percent of case officers make successful recruitments. It’s not baseball. You don’t want to have a 41-5 record, you want a 41-0 record. Approaching a recruit and failing has consequences.”

Other drug enforcement officials agree. "The Burmese were extremely cooperative with U.S. Law enforcement during the time I was there," said Barry Broman, who spent two years at the U.S. Embassy before retiring in 1996. "They provided major assistance. The problem was the limited amount of assistance we could give the Burmese."
There have also been accusations that drug traffickers play an important role in the Myanmar economy. In May 1997, U.S. Secretary of State Madelaine Albright claimed that drug money had penetrated all reaches of society and traffickers were becoming "leading lights" in Myanmar. "Drug money is so pervasive in the Burmese economy that it taints legitimate investment", she warned.
But Broman, who is one of America's most knowledgeable experts on the complex world of Asian drug trafficking, questions Albright's opinion. "There are a lot of accusations that SLORC is involved in narcotics, but no one's produced any evidence — so where's the smoking gun?" he said, during a recent trip to Yangon. "In my experience, the trade is not institutional in Burma. There's indirect profiting from the narcotics trade. But across the border, you find Thai politicians and Generals in bed with the traffickers. That's not the case here."
